The Braj 84 Kosh (Chaurasi Kos) Yatra is not merely a pilgrimage—it is a sacred spiritual journey deeply rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures and divine lore. This yatra holds immense religious significance and is believed to grant liberation from sins along with divine blessings to those who complete it with devotion.
According to sacred texts, a profound spiritual event once unfolded at Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva appeared deeply contemplative, prompting Goddess Parvati to ask the reason for his concern. Lord Shiva revealed that he had learned that without a spiritual Guru, even the most virtuous deeds do not bear complete fruit—and he himself had no Guru.
Upon Goddess Parvati’s suggestion, Lord Shiva approached Lord Vishnu and humbly requested him to become his spiritual Guru. Lord Vishnu graciously accepted, and it was decided that the sacred initiation would take place on the banks of the Birija River.
To welcome Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva created a divine city along the riverbanks, filled with lush forests, fruit-bearing trees, cows, birds, and natural abundance. He established a magnificent golden throne named Shri Golok Dham. Pleased by this divine creation, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi accepted Lord Shiva’s request to reside there. Lord Shiva lovingly named them Krishna and Radha.
Radha and Krishna lived blissfully in Golok Dham. One day, when Radha’s brother visited, they were so absorbed in divine love that they failed to notice him. Angered, he cursed them to live apart despite their eternal love.
To fulfill this curse, Krishna declared that they must descend to Earth. Radha hesitated, as Earth lacked the purity of Golok. Krishna then proposed bringing Golok itself to Earth. He invited Yamuna Ji to descend, merging the waters of Birija into her. Krishna then spread divine soil across a vast region, measuring the length of 84 of his fingers, forming a sacred land spanning 252 kilometers. This land became known as Braj Bhoomi.
All the cows, birds, forests, and divine beings were invited to inhabit this sacred region.
Radha took birth at Raval, while Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and raised in Gokul by Nand Baba. Their earthly separation fulfilled the curse, sanctifying Braj forever. It is believed that anyone who completes the Chaurasi Kosh Yatra is freed from sins and blessed with infinite spiritual grace.
